Peer Counselor

Department: 050 - Florida Assertive Community Treatment Team
Location: Leesburg, FL

FUNCTION: This member of the multidisciplinary team has responsibility to carry out rehabilitation and support functions and assist in treatment; provides substance abuse services, education, support, and consultation to families; and provides crisis intervention under the clinical supervision of staff with professional degrees.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

A.        Be a member of the individual treatment team for an assigned number of individuals.

B.        Participate in comprehensive assessment of the seven areas of evaluation specified by the PACT model of care.

C.        Consult with community agencies and families to maintain coordination in the treatment process.

D.        Document individual progress to maintain a permanent record of individual activity according to established methods and procedures.

E.         Participate in daily staff organizational meetings and treatment planning review meetings.

F.         Participate in providing treatment and substance use services.

G.        Mentor individuals in Recovery and Wellness strategies and model recovery skills and behaviors.

H.        Advocate for peers with regard to stigma issues, respect and person-centeredness within the team and the larger community.

I.          Participate in the on-call rotation when sufficiently experienced according to the clinical judgment of the Team Leader (unless qualified to do so by degree.) Must be available to work some weekends as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelorís degree or high school degree plus experience with adults who have severe and persistent mental illnesses.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

Essential Factors: Must have been a recipient of mental health services. Must have a strong commitment to the right and ability of each person with a severe and persistent mental illness to live in normal community residences; work in market job; and have access to helpful, adequate, competent, and continuous supports and services. Skills and competence to establish supportive trusting relationships with persons with severe and persistent mental illnesses and respect for individual rights and personal preferences in treatment are essential. Must have a valid driverís license and a clean driving record.

Staff Development: Completes all administrative and competency requirements in accordance to Individual Training Plan.
